The Capital Transit Company Records, 1862-1956, consists chiefly of administrative and financial records. The administrative records include correspondence, certificates of incorporation, board of directors' meeting minutes, stockholders meeting minutes, etc. The financial records include bound ledgers showing receipts and expenditures for various accounts and companies, vouchers, contracts, deeds, titles, valuation documents, etc. Also found in this collection are records relating to construction of the Union Station Plaza,1908-1909, by a joint construction committee of Capital Traction Company and the Anacostia and Potomac River Railroad. The collection includes records of various predecessor companies, including the Washington and Georgetown Railroad Company and the Metropolitan Railroad Company.

The Capital Transit Company, a street railway company, was formed in 1895 in Washington, D.C. Its merger in 1933 with the Washington Railway and Electric Company led to the formation of the Capital Transit Company and with all street railways in Washington under one management. The company continued to provide service until 1956 when its franchise was revoked. It was succeeded by D.C.
